Time to make Hay

May 25, 2011

Yeah, yeah, I know it’s a time worn pun, but I just couldn’t resist it. Our 5th time at the Hay on Wye literary festival and we just can’t wait. Notice I said we. My other half, not known for his love of all things literary is also chomping at the bit. After the first couple of years, he got fed up with waiting around for me as I attended my umpteenth event, so he started volunteering as a steward. He still manages to see as many musicians, policitians, journalists as he so desires, and even the odd novelist. He’s even bought  a few books – and they lie, part-read and squeezed between my hundreds of well thumbed purchases, maybe to get his full attention in retirement. He loves the volunteering part, which is a blessing – great people, great events, and, I am told, ‘they feed you really well too’!

So, with over a hundred tickets between the seven of us who are going to Hay this year (6 adults and a very excited 8 years old boy) this is one of the years highlights. Past golden moments have included Vivian Westwood throwing a bit of a strop as people coughed during her Active Resistance Manifesto, resulting in several people leaving the arena calling out ‘what a load of rubbish!’ – Ms Westwood looked perplexed to say the least. “Is it always like this?” she asked her audience. Meeting Tony Curtis at the Pemberton’s bookshop signing; after his session which was pure delight, including the thunderstorm overhead which killed the power. Tony carried on chatting the people in the front row, unfazed by the interruption.  He still had a twinkle in his eye! I came out of an event one year to find Pete, Rob & Max chatting outside the Festival (formerly Tyrells) Bar to none other than the python Terry Jones, what a gent he was too. “Just been chatting to Terry about Richard III”. Of course you were, how fantastic! I am sure this year will prompt some more gems, Hay seems to bring out the best in humankind, and I always leave there with a tinge of sadness, but brimming full of ideas.
